Having seen how there's quite a lot of people in here who don't only like Gob but ice-hockey too, I decided to set up this thread for discussion concerning the Olympic ice-hockey tournament which is just about to begin tonight. Canada and Russia are clear favorites, but are there any other teams you're looking forward to seeing on the final round? Will there be any surprises? How about players, anyone you'd like to see win the scoreboard? Let us know here.
I'm personally rooting for Finland, naturally, but also for Slovakia, since they're in a very similar situation than our team (and country) is. Out of the top teams, I'm also looking forward to the performance of USA. I've heard that their team is VERY fast.

Well I'll be cheering for Canada most because thats where I'm from, but I'm also gonna root for Finland because they have some pretty cool Gob fans on this site.

Obviously i'm a fan of Finland too because I live there, but I don't believe that they win.. The team is so overaged and well, the coach left one of our best players, Jussi Jokinen out of the team! Sweden is my second favorite because it's our neighbor country. There's some players(Peter Forsberg, Teemu Selänne, Sergei Fedorov) that are going to have the last olympics of their careers, I'm following their moves pretty much when talking about the invidual players. but I'm also gonna root for Finland because they have some pretty cool Gob fans on this site. Hahah, nice man!

Well I am from America, so I will be rooting for the USA, however I am also a huge Red Wings fan, so I root for teams with their players on it, which would make Sweeden my second pick. Its hard to root for Canada because they are by far the best team, but I never root against them unless its to the US or Sweeden.

Also, I do believe that the US team has a shot at gold, but only because they have the best goal tending. If their goalies play great then they can compete with anyone, however the US skaters are not exactly top notch

... but only because they have the best goal tending. That's arguable. Nothing wrong with the Finnish or Canadian goalies in this tournament, either. Both of the above teams have a very solid trio, while on the other hand, there are some possible issues with USA and their goalies. To sum it up, Ryan Miller might be pretty exhausted because of Buffalo's recent losing continuum, Thomas is getting older (he isn't even #1 on Boston anymore because of Tuukka Rask) and Quick is (ironically) a bit too young and unexperienced in my opinion to carry the responsibility of being a number one goalie. We'll see though... This is the tournament of all time and I understand that if we really want to get into it, each team will have more than a few flaws to dig up. Just saying.

Remember that Thomas won the Vezina trophy last year and Ryan Miller is, in my oppinion, the best Goalie in the NHL... That being said i think Canada takes home gold, and Im sorry to all you Finland fans, but I dont see them getting a medal

Thomas might have won Vezina last year, but that was last year... And it's really the current fitness of the players that matters anyway. Miller is one of the best goalies in the world today, no doubt, but even the best goalies can't last through everything. Chances for Finland taking a medal might not be that big, but remember how Toriono was? I bet no one expected a Finland - Sweden final match, but it happened... Anything is practically possible in a tournament of this kind.

I'm supporting them, still because I'm living in the same country.

It's not just Finland's team this year if we want to get into the subject. The future of hockey for us looks quite awful to be honest. Jussi Jokinen or no Jussi Jokinen... We're screwed anyway.

Yeah, and from what I've been playing against some of the junior teams around Finland, didn't seem there was going to be any star potential either.. The last "good" generation was 84-85, now there's just one or two stars in one generation. Looks bad.

Having to double post on this one, here's the games of this day and some of my thoughts about them:
Finland - Belarus: Not going to be an easy game for Finland, I'm sure Belarus has been training hard for this tournament. They've got a young team with some stars in it (Grabovski, Kostitsyn brothers) they might have a pretty good chance to win this game when not looking through those blue-white glasses. Not going to say any results though, would be too hard to bet.
Sweden - Germany: Sweden's gonna win this one with 4-1 or 3-1.
Czech Republic - Slovakia: This one's going to end up for Slovakia I hope. With 4-2.
